GA4 not reporting correctly?
If the numbers in GA4 don't reflect what you're seeing in the business, it makes every marketing and website decision harder than it needs to be. Whether tracking broke after a site change or was never set up properly in the first place, we can get to the bottom of it and put it right. - Sales or enquiries are missing from your reports. - Purchases and other actions are being counted more than once. - Reporting has changed after a website update, migration or cookie banner change. - Traffic sources look wrong, making campaign performance difficult to judge. Agentix provides GA4 audits, setup and tracking repairs for eCommerce, B2B and trade businesses. We combine GA4 and Google Tag Manager implementation with CRO and UX experience, helping you investigate tracking problems and measure the customer journeys that matter to your business.
How we help you get your numbers straight
We get stuck into your setup, follow the journeys your customers actually take and check what GA4 records at each step. Whether you are tracking eCommerce checkouts or B2B enquiry forms and phone call conversions, we investigate what's happening and explain what needs changing in plain English. We don't just send a PDF and walk away. Where the fault sits in GA4, Google Tag Manager or your consent setup, we fix it and test it against real journeys on your site. Where a change needs to happen in your website code or checkout templates, we write a clear brief for your developer or agency so they know exactly what to update, and once they've made the change, we retest. If you're planning a new site or starting from scratch, we build the setup properly from the start. We work out which customer actions matter to your business, configure GA4 and Tag Manager around those journeys, set up the BigQuery export where you want to own the raw data, and test the setup before you rely on it.
Why trustworthy data matters to your business
Honestly, no data is better than wrong data. With no data, at least you know you're guessing. With wrong data, you can head in the wrong direction and spend serious money getting there. Realistically, though, many businesses have to work with what they have. Nobody is going to switch GA4 off while they still have campaigns to judge and a website to run. So our job is to make the data you have trustworthy, and to be straight with you about what it is telling you. Because we also work on [website conversion and user journeys](/services/website-conversion), accurate numbers are the first thing we tackle. You can't grow online sales or improve a customer journey if you can't trust the numbers underneath. And when GA4 feeds Google Ads, tracking faults can start costing money: if an ad campaign is optimising around a broken conversion event, or if every minor action on the site has been marked as a primary conversion, your budget follows the wrong signal.
One mechanism, in plain terms
Take a standard B2B or trade enquiry form. If the conversion tag is set to fire when a visitor lands on a thank-you page, and a developer later updates the form so it shows an on-page confirmation message without changing the URL, GA4 stops recording leads even though enquiries are still arriving in your inbox. Going the other way, if someone attaches the trigger to a click on the Submit button, GA4 can count every click where a visitor missed a required field and the form never actually went through.
What a reporting gap looks like in numbers
An example with invented round numbers, so you can see how a tracking gap changes a budget conversation. It is not a client result. | Measure | What GA4 reports | What your sales records show | | -- | -- | -- | | Campaign spend | £6,000 | £6,000 | | Enquiries counted | 120 form submissions | 80 matched enquiries | | Cost per enquiry | £50 | £75 | If GA4 is counting Submit clicks rather than completed enquiries, a campaign can look a third cheaper per lead than the matched figure suggests. That gap of 40 needs looking into before anyone changes a budget: some may be failed form attempts or duplicate tag firings, some may be real people whose details never reached your team (see our work on [customer data and systems](/services/customer-data-systems)), and some may be a difference in date or attribution basis. Platform limits have real numbers behind them too: - **Consent Mode modelling:** Google's modelling for visitors who decline cookies is not automatic. It needs Consent Mode across your pages, Google tags loading before the consent banner, and a minimum amount of traffic in both groups: at least **1,000 events per day** from visitors who declined, for at least **7 days**, an
Common GA4 problems we sort out
In our experience, many tracking issues creep in after a change on the website where nobody planned the measurement side, such as moving to Shopify or Magento, updating a checkout or form, or fitting a cookie banner and forgetting about it. | What you see in GA4 | What can be happening underneath | What it does to your decisions | | -- | -- | -- | | Direct traffic has taken over the report | In accounts like these we've seen the cookie banner and tags firing out of sequence, or cross-domain parameters lost in a site update, leaving visits that cannot be tied to a source | Paid, organic and email channels lose credit for the sales and enquiries they actually brought in | | Your own site or payment provider shows as a referrer | Missing referral exclusions or cross-domain measurement splitting one customer into two sessions | The original marketing channel is overwritten at checkout, making your payment gateway look like your best traffic source | | Form conversions look higher or lower than real leads | Tag fires on a failed Submit click, or a rebuilt form submits without loading a thank-you URL | You either cut campaigns that are quietly delivering leads, or scale campaigns that a
Frequently asked questions
### Why doesn't GA4 match our Shopify, Magento or CRM numbers? GA4 and your order system or CRM measure different things, so they won't match to the exact pound or single enquiry. Visitor cookie choices, ad blockers, payment redirects and returns all create normal differences. We look for the gaps that shouldn't be there: sudden drops after a site change, duplicate transactions, or form triggers that fire on failed clicks rather than completed enquiries. ### Do you just audit GA4, or do you actually fix the tracking? We do both. In our experience, an audit on its own doesn't solve much if nobody has time to implement it. We fix what sits inside GA4, Google Tag Manager and your consent settings directly. Where a fix needs a change to your website code or data layer, we write a clear technical brief for your developer and retest once they've made the change. ### Can you fix GA4 if our Google Ads conversions look wrong? Yes. We check how GA4 events are imported into Google Ads, make sure primary conversions reflect real sales or enquiries rather than minor page actions, and verify that conversion values and transaction IDs are being passed accurately so your bidding isn't steered by
How to get started
You don't need a technical spec to start a conversation. Tell us which numbers look wrong, what decisions they're holding up, and whether anything changed recently on the site, or let us know what you're planning to build if you need a clean setup. We'll carry out a short access review of your GA4 and Google Tag Manager setup, tell you where we'd look first, and give you a clear, scoped quote for the work.
